How I Celebrated National Dog Day (and Why Routine is the Best Gift of All)
Did you know August 26 was National Dog Day?
I love this day! While I believe every day should be National Dog Day, I enjoy having a reason to do something extra special for my pups on August 26th every year.
This year, I celebrated in three ways:
Purchased an indoor/outdoor agility course
Not only is this fun, but it’s great exercise and a perfect way to bond with my dogs. Helping them learn how to navigate the course—and then watching the lightbulb go on when they get it—makes my heart so happy! Plus, it’s a lot of laughs. As I like to say, it’s fun and funny.

Bought new living room furniture with our pups in mind
Who does that??? Serious dog parents and any dog parent who wants to make smart, long-term choices.
If you allow your dogs on the couch, it’s important to consider:
Fabric: durability and ease of cleaning
Color: what best hides or camouflages fur
Design: plenty of space to sprawl out and snuggle
Because let’s face it, dog fur is a way of life. And in our house, cuddle time is a must.
For those who don’t know, we have two large yellow Labrador Retrievers. Here’s what we chose:
Fabric: Leather – easy to clean and proven to work well for us over the years.
Color: Dark brown – even though our Labs’ fur shows up on it, the leather wipes down easily.
Design: A recliner for the Dog Dad, plus an L-shaped sectional without center consoles. Why no consoles? So the dogs can sprawl out or snuggle close without a barrier between us. We’ll still have space for drinks and books, thanks to end tables on either side.
This setup means all of us, including our pups, have a comfortable place to relax together.
Stuck to their daily routine – While “special” is fun, routine is what keeps dogs feeling safe and secure. Their meals, walks, and playtimes stayed right on schedule. When dogs know what to expect, they can truly relax. And a relaxed dog is a happy dog.
National Dog Day is a wonderful reminder that it’s not just about big gestures. It’s about giving our dogs a life where they feel loved, safe, and part of the family every single day.
How did you celebrate National Dog Day? Did you try something new, go on an adventure, or simply spend a cozy day together? Share in the comments - I’d love to hear!
P.S. This is me and my boys this past week - the new furniture has not yet arrived :)
